Seagate Backup Plus Portable 5TB

The Seagate Backup Plus Portable 5TB is one of the highest‑capacity 2.5″ USB‑powered drives available. It uses SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording), which trades random‑write performance for density. Sequential reads averaged 125–135 MB/s and writes 118–130 MB/s.

SMR drives behave well for large, contiguous writes (full backups), but degrade under incremental or mixed workloads. Once the internal cache saturates, write speeds can drop sharply, and the drive may remain busy for extended periods while reorganising data.
